Home education is defined by Florida law as “sequentially progressive instruction of a student directed by his or her parent or guardian in order to satisfy the requirements of Statute 1003.21 and 1002.41.”
This broad language in the statute allows parents freedom to direct their children’s education.
It is important to note that students of all ages are homeschooled across the state and country, and many enter college straight from their home education programs.

The parent/guardian must direct his/her child, with progressive instruction, in order to comply with the requirements of the Florida Statutes. Check out our FL Homeschool Law Page to learn more on these statutes and laws.
The parent/guardian is responsible for the curriculum, materials, and textbooks, as well as the maintenance of a portfolio of work samples.
As required by Section 1002.41, F.S., to establish a home education program and maintain compliance with the statute, a parent must:
1. Send a written notice of intent to the District to notify establishment of your Home Education Program (within 30 days of starting).
2. Maintain a portfolio of records, consisting of a log of educational activities, writings, worksheets, and creative materials used or developed by the student. The parent shall determine the contents of the portfolio.
3. Make the portfolio available for inspection by the superintendent, or designee, upon a 15-day notice. (The legislation does not require the superintendent to inspect all portfolios. This occurs in rare cases.)
4. Provide an annual educational evaluation (more information here) for the student's educational progress to the school district superintendent or designee by the anniversary date of the notice of intent.
5. Preserve each student's school year portfolio for two years at a time.
6. Submit a notice of termination form upon completion of or removal from the home education program or change of residence to another District.
